The Pan America™ Arrives

It was hard to know if it was excitement or a look of fear on the staff's faces when the classic black and orange Harley-Davidson® semi-truck pulled up for the very first stop of the Canadian Pan America™ demo bike tour. You see, before today, many of the staff at Trev Deeley Motorcycles have never even considered riding something like a dual sport adventure bike.

Admittedly, Yuki Ochiai, who works as a parts and service consultant within the dealership, began the day with trepidation towards the size of the bike. "I was so nervous, I've always ridden cruisers, I ride a Dyna Street Bob... but as soon I hopped on the Pan America™ Special that has adaptive rider height function... it felt like night and day." Yuki goes on to say, "before today there's no way you could have got me on one of these bikes... there's no way you can get me to buy one of these bikes... but when I got on that thing (Pan America™ Special) I was like, I need this in my life!"

Adventure Bikes

Adventure bikes can be intimidating to riders, and this can be because they are lifted off the ground with beefed-up suspension. This extra suspension travel is designed to handle the bumps in the road, plus all the excess weight of all your gear. The gear can add up to a lot, especially if you are on a lengthy trek. It is hard to pack light, so these bikes come with racks to add your soft saddlebags or hard cases to help with your storage. The Pan America™ is designed to handle the terrain that you put it through. This is exactly why you would be purchasing this bike. You want to get out and enjoy an adventure!

Adventure riding is all about exploration, as you look for terrain and parts of the world, which are not well-traveled. With a dual-sport motorcycle, you can expect to get off the beaten path into the mud, desert sand, jungle floors, and then, of course, our favourite here in beautiful British Columbia, through the epic mountain ranges.

The Competition

When Harley-Davidson® Canada arrived with a fleet of Pan America™ motorcycles, they also brought along the other competitive brands in the category.  Darren James, the owner of Trev Deeley Motorcycles, explained the significance of having the entire staff ride all the different motorcycle manufacturers' bikes to truly feel what a dual-sport motorcycle is.

"It's so important that every one of my staff puts a leg over one of these motorcycles so they can understand because the difference between riding a dual sport and a standard Harley-Davidson® is night and day," explains Darren.

Dual sport/adventure riding is the fastest-growing segment of the US motorcycle market. This is the first bike in Harley-Davidson® history that is marketed as an adventure bike. That doesn't mean Harley-Davidson® has not created motorcycles for the off-road or been here before. Because they most certainly have.

When Harley-Davidson® began in 1903, they certainly did not have the roads of today. Everything is a Road: The Path to Pan America™ touches on the years of off-road history. In this short documentary, you will see Bill Rodencal say, "This is our game; this is the game we have always played." And we think that it is very fitting to remind people that this company has been through two World Wars, one Great Depression, and countless other historical events in its 118-year history.

The Harley-Davidson® Pan America™ Review

There's no question the all-new Harley-Davidson® Pan America™ adventure bike is well-designed, well-engineered, innovative, and maybe extremely cool. "Based on feedback from staff, this was nothing but a positive day," says owner Darren James. "Getting into the turns, the thing just handles great," explains sales supervisor Stuart Wells after returning from a demo ride on the Pan America™. "What a machine. The power out of that engine is phenomenal."

The Specs

There are a lot of great features on this bike. To start, the 150-hp, 1250cc V-twin is also all-new, with dual overhead camshafts and variable valve timing.

And that innovative suspension that won people over like Yuki, "lowers the seat for you at stoplights so both feet of shorter riders can reach the ground." This is officially called adaptive ride height. In addition, it can hold the bike in place when stopped on hills, so you can more easily accelerate away after an uphill stop. Adaptive ride height is not a gimmick. It is really going to be a game-changer.
